A Simple Step-by-Step Checklist for Packing and Relocating

Whether you’re relocating to Philadelphia, Towson, Wilmington, or Newark, you already know that relocating from one home to the next is not just a single step; it is a whole process. If you want your move to go smoothly you need to proceed methodically, step by step. It’s important not to neglect crucial aspects of the relocation process, or you may find your move-in date set back. Forgetting to check items on your to-do list for relocation could also end up costing you money. And you should start planning for your move many months in advance.

Here are some additional tips and resources from the friendly experts at L & M Moving Company.

Plan for your move while it’s still months away.

Before you even start packing your boxes, there are arrangements that need to be made for your existing home, and for your new home, and to prepare to move your possessions safely.

  • Use this guide to help you plan your move – and make sure you don’t miss anything!
  • Next, find a good moving company. Read local reviews and compare rates before contracting with anyone.
  • Start working on decluttering and get rid of everything you won’t be taking with you. You can bring items to thrift stores, host a yard sale, and plan a large trash pickup day, to get rid of additional stuff.
  • Plan for any childcare, babysitting, or pet sitting  you will need on the day of the move.

What to do shortly before your move.

The weeks leading up to your move will be very busy ones! The more you can do in advance, the easier time you’ll have it, on the final few days prior to your actual move.

  • Change your address with the post office and for any important accounts or organizations, such as your credit card agencies or health care providers. Find out what records may need to be transferred from banks, schools, or doctor’s offices.
  • Make sure utilities in your old residence are scheduled to be turned off the day after you move out. And be sure to set up your utilities prior to your move to your new home. Also be sure you have secured a reliable internet provider.
  • Pack up everything you will be taking with you. If you pack a little each day, it won’t feel too overwhelming. Be sure to label all your boxes accurately and keep a file on what is packed where.
  • Make sure you have important documents and valuables are secured where you can access them easily. This includes birth and marriage certificates, social security cards, any additional cash, and valuable jewelry.
  • Clean up as you pack. You may also want to arrange to have your home cleaned professionally after you have moved out.

On the day of the move.

It’s probably unavoidable that moving day will be a little hectic. If you’ve planned well things should go smoothly, however.

  • Have every member of your family packed up with the basics they need: clothing, toiletries, medications, and any snacks or entertainment for on the road.
  • Be prepared to pay and tip your movers, as well as other service providers you’ve hired.
  • Have a meal planned for after you have moved into your new home. This might mean packing food to prepare or arranging takeout or delivery.

Of course, the details of the boxes you need to check may differ depending on your situation, but the above are some important moving-related tasks to think about while you are still months out from moving day. If you plan carefully and follow a timeline, your move to your new home should feel more exciting and less stressful.
